Medical student Eleanor Wilson campaigns for free provision of sanitary products

Published: 8 March 2019

Eleanor was successful in passing a bill through the BMA's student conference and subsequently through their Annual Representatives Meeting calling for the free provision of sanitary products, and specifically, for provision of products within hospitals. In 2019, NHS England, Wales and Scotland announced they will be doing so thanks to Eleanor's bill.

In 2018, Eleanor was successful in passing a bill through the BMA’s student conference (and subsequently through their Annual Representatives Meeting), calling for the free provision of sanitary products - specifically for provision of products within hospitals.

Over the past year Eleanor has worked with the BMA to gather data - a freedom of information request revealed how patchy provision of these hygiene products was. Last month the BMA issued a press release with its findings and called for change.

As of March, NHS England, Wales and Scotland have all announced that they will be providing products for free in their hospitals thanks to Eleanor’s bill.

Eleanor was highly praised and honoured within the BMA's International Women's Day email. Amazing work, Eleanor!
