Research Methods in Health Economics and HTA

This course aims to introduce students to different study designs and commonly applied research methods for health econmics and health technology assessment to build their core knkowledge and skills. This will include:

- Mixed methods for synthesising evidence.
- Economics evaluation — including modelling.
- Qualitative methods and incorporating patients' and public perspectivesd, and considerations around implementation critical appraisal and research integrity.

Introduced methods will be accompanied by research examples. The course also teaches practical skills in undertaking health economic assessments.

Course aims (ILOs)

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  •  Apply different tools effectively to critically appraise an HTA report. 
  •  Identify and effectively employ knowledge of good research practice and ethics.
  •  Implement knowledge of the mixed methods and perspectives that go into HTA. 
  •  Illustrate they can identify and explain the various elements of an HTA in line with the appropriate study design.
  •  Implement their knowledge and skills of principles and techniques of health technology assessment, including study design and analysis, evidence synthesis, qualitative and quantitative methods, and economic evaluation including modelling.

Course Structure

Five-week online course comprising five lectures and accompanying practical exercises. The lectures will be 45min/1hr in duration and exercises associated with lectures will take a notional two hours for the participants to complete. Each week the academic lead will be responsible for monitoring and contributing to the discussion board. The exercise solutions will be posted on moodle the following week.
