Biography

Dr Jennifer Lees, MA (Cantab) MBChB MRCP(Neph) PhD, is a Senior Clinical Research Fellow and Lead for Data Science (School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health, University of Glasgow) and Honorary Consultant Nephrologist (NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde). She graduated from the Universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh then moved to Glasgow to train in renal and general internal medicine in 2013. During her PhD, she designed and led the ViKTORIES trial (ISRCTN22012044; funded by (Kidney Research UK) testing vitamin K supplementation to treat vascular stiffness and calcification in kidney transplant recipients. She was a co-investigator on the K4Kidneys vitamin K trial in people with CKD 3b/4 (ISRCTN21444964; funded by (British Heart Foundation). Her post-doctoral lectureship was funded by the Chief Scientist Office (Scotland).

In 2022, Dr Lees won two prestigious annual awards for significant contributions to renal research as a junior investigator: the UK Kidney Association Raine Award and European Renal Association (ERA) Eberhard Ritz Award for Clinical Science and was recognised as a “Rising Star” by the International Society of Nephrology. Dr Lees is current Visual Abstracts and Biomarkers/Formula Editor for Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation, ERA mentor, previous co-chair of the ERA Journal Club and current member of the UK Renal Health Data Network, UK Kidney Association Renal Trials Network, Cardio-Renal Clinical Study Group and eGFR Working Group.

Research interests

Research Theme: Cardiovascular Data Science

Dr Lees works within the Renal Research Team and is a member of the Cardio-Nephro-Oncology (CaNOn) Research Group. Dr Lees is interested in: using data science and clinical trials to understand and improve the long-term risks associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly cardiovascular disease and cancer; use of cystatin C for risk-stratification of adverse outcomes; sex disparities in the care and outcomes of people with CKD.
