Founded in 1869 the Glasgow University Rugby Football Club is one of the university’s oldest student groups, predating the Glasgow University Sports Association, to which it is now affiliated.
The standard of rugby has been consistently high having fielded thirteen full internationalists in the past.
The club currently presides over eight squads: a 1st, 2nd XV and 3rd XV, a Development Squad and four interfaculty teams, allowing players of all levels to participate.
The 1st XV currently compete in BUCS 1A.
The 2nd XV currently compete in BUCS 3A.
The newly revived 3rd XV will compete in BUCS 5A and the Conference Cup this season.
The Development Squad will compete in various tournaments throughout the year, as well as in standalone fixtures.
We currently train twice a week, with BUCS fixtures played on Wednesday afternoons.
We train at Garscube Sport Complex (location of our home matches):
- Monday 1800 - 2000, and
- Friday 1800 - 2000 (3g pitch)
With the links we have with local club sides to aid our coaches when required, we are able to offer first rate coaching opportunities for those experienced players and for those that are just beginning rugby. Strength and conditioning programmes are also available for all players.
Whilst having a serious and professional outlook on the field, off the field we are widely known as one of the most sociable clubs. We have many social events throughout the year including a rugby ball, a fresher’s tour, and a fantastic club dinner to mention but a few.
Week in week out, after matches on Wednesdays, you will also be able to find us in the GUU, hopefully celebrating a victory! The club welcomes social members and it is great way of getting to know like-minded people as you embark on your university career. The club has an active alumni community providing strong support for the club both on and off the pitch.
Whether you are an aspiring internationalist or simply a social animal (or preferably both) the GURFC welcomes you with open arms. It will be a decision you will not regret and more than likely lead to you meeting some of your best friends, not only for university, but for the rest of your life!
