Rugby Men

Founded in 1869, the Glasgow University Rugby Football Club (GURFC) is one of the university’s oldest student groups, predating the Glasgow University Sports Association, to which it is now affiliated. The Club is a founding member of the Scottish Rugby Union ( https://www.scottishrugby.org/) and has fielded thirteen full internationalists.

Competing

The club currently has 3 University teams that compete on a Wednesday, along with a team that plays on a Saturday.

The 1st XV currently compete in BUCS North B, winning the league in 2017- 2018 and winning the BUCS Trophy in 2018-2019. The 1st XV also play in the annual Glasgow Varsity Match against The University of Strathclyde.

Training

We train at Garscube Sport Complex on Mondays (18:00 – 20:00) and Fridays (18:00 – 20:00).

Performance Squad

The Performance Squad gives rugby players at the University the opportunity to train and play to their full potential, whilst studying to gain a world class degree.

Players in this squad will receive the following support:

  • Year round supervised strength & conditioning, including exclusive use of the club sport gym.
  • Video analysis sessions
  • Physiotherapy support and appointments
  • Player reviews with the high performance coach
  • Position specific coaching

The club also has links with the FOSROC (https://www.scottishrugby.org/fixtures-and-results/academies/) West Academy that provides an opportunity for players to secure an academy contract.

If you are a prospective performance squad player, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Calum Hill - Calum.Hill@glasgow.ac.uk to discuss potential sport bursaries and find out more about the performance programme.

Representative Honours:In the 2018/2019 season we had 8 players represent Scottish Students.

Social

Whilst having a serious and professional outlook on the field, off the field we are widely known as one of the most sociable clubs at The University of Glasgow. We have many social events throughout the year including a rugby ball, a fresher’s tour, charity darts night and a fantastic club dinner, to mention but a few.

Week in week out, after matches on Wednesdays, you will also be able to find us in the Glasgow University Union, hopefully celebrating a victory! The club welcomes social members and it is great way of getting to know like-minded people as you embark on your university career. The club also has an active alumni community providing strong support for the club both on and off the pitch.

Joining

Whether you are an aspiring internationalist or social rugby player, the GURFC welcomes you with open arms. It will be a decision you will not regret and more than likely lead to you meeting some of your best friends, not only for university, but for the rest of your life!

Check out our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter @GUSAMensRugby.

If you are interested in joining the club and have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the committee:
