A word of thanks from the College of Arts & Humanities
Supporting and celebrating the Arts around the world
On behalf of all staff and students in the College of Arts & Humanities, I would like to thank you for your support of scholarships in the College and the wider University.
As you will be aware, the financial assistance that scholarships provide can often be a vital factor in our students’ ability to undertake and successfully complete their studies at Glasgow. They also allow us to offer access to higher education to individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, from both Scotland and the UK and countries around the world.
One of our current scholarship recipients in the College is PhD student Naa Densua Tordzro, a designer and African textile artist. Naa Densua is part of the University’s James McCune Smith PhD Scholarship Programme, named after the first African American student to be awarded a medical degree, by the University of Glasgow in 1837. Naa Densua’s research focuses on decolonising textiles and fashion education in the context of the Global South, supervised by academics in the School of Modern Languages & Cultures and the School of Culture & Creative Arts.
Naa Densua said,
“I am privileged to be among the first recipients of the James McCune Smith scholarship funds, through the College of Arts, School of Modern Languages and Cultures. My research is being supervised by Dr Rachel Douglas and Dr Sally Tuckett. I will be using this scholarship to focus on textiles as objects of migration as well as exploring the concept of ‘Decolonising Textiles’ in the Ghanaian and Scottish contexts – bringing my birthplace of Ghana and my home of choice Scotland together in this interdisciplinary PhD. I am grateful to have this opportunity to build on my work thus far.”
It has been a year since I arrived in Glasgow, as a new Vice-Principal & Head of College, and I continue to be inspired by our vibrant and creative institution, our talented students and staff and our successful and generous alumni community.
