Looking back on a year of achievments

As a new teaching year gets underway, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for continuing to support the student community of the College of Science and Engineering, and to provide you with an update on student achievements from the last academic year. Now, more than ever, do our students depend on this valuable financial support, and we are extremely grateful for donor contribution to nurture all aspects of the student journey.

Some news stories out of the College from the past academic year include the Formula Student Racing Team, UG Racing, winning Formula Student at Silverstone in July 2022. This is the first time UG Racing have been Formula Student champions.

In addition, in August 2022, a team of students from the Schools of Computing Science, Geographical and Earth Sciences and Engineering won a £600,000 prize from the UK Government. This prize was for their nanosatellite design at the LaunchUK Nanosat Design Competition, organised by the UK Space Agency and Department of Transport. GU Orbit’s design, OirthirSAT is now being manufactured for launch into space, and the data it gathers will be freely shared amongst the scientific community.

And finally, students from the School of Computing Science took second place and a $100,000 prize at the International Alexa Prize Taskbot Challenge. This year, they expanded on their first design to include services for a broader range of tasks including hobbies and home activities.
