Financial support from the Nuffield Foundation has helped to make possible a survey-based project on political change in Ukraine, with particular emphasis upon international orientations, political engagement, and the social bases of party choices. The work is being carried out in collaboration with Dr Elena Korosteleva-Polglase of UCW Aberystwyth, and builds on earlier and continuing work on regime-citizen relations in postcommunist Europe. Our project also includes a series of focus groups, carried out in various locations that are designed to tap regional political orientations.

A first paper, drawing on our focus group evidence, was presented to the BASEES Conference at Cambridge in the spring of 2007. A further paper, using our survey evidence in association with data we have gathered in successive surveys since 2000, will be presented at the AAASS annual meeting in New Orleans in November 2007; it will seek to map the patterns of international orientation (towards the 'East' or the 'West') and their social bases. A paper on 'Turnout and Representation Bias in Post-Communist Europe' with Ian McAllister, which draws on our 2006 survey data, appeared in Political Studies in September 2007.

It is hoped that additional support will be obtained to replicate the questionnaire following the election scheduled to take place at the end of September 2007.
