Building a New Democracy?: Television, Citizens and Voting in Russia

Investigators: Sarah Oates (PI) and Stephen White
Date: February 2000-August 2001

This grant involved 24 focus groups of Russian citizens to discuss the role of media in politics as well as survey research on attitudes toward political communication in Russia. The project analysed television news, free-time political broadcasts and paid political advertising in the 1999 and 2000 Russian elections. The research found the consolidation of pro-Kremlin party forces, as well as the rise of ‘neo-Soviet’ attitudes on the part of citizens. The findings of the grant are detailed in Television, Democracy and Elections in Russia (Routledge, 2006, Sarah Oates).
