Poland’s Third Transition

Poland’s Third Transition

Date: 2001-2002

Poland was at the forefront of the first and second transitions from Communism (towards democracy and a market economy). But the third transition – to European integration – differed fundamentally from the first and the second. Broadly speaking, the first two were about asserting Polish independence and therefore went with the grain of Polish national consciousness. But the third was about relinquishing a large measure of that new-won independence, which went against the grain of Polish national consciousness. This project used a module of questions in the 2001 Polish National Election Study to study Polish nationalism and Polish attitudes towards EU accession.
