Professor Javakhishvili will deliver 2 masterclasses on gender issues. The first class can be considered as an introduction and therefore, a general overview of the gender equality situation in Georgia. The second presentation focuses on the topic of domestic violence. She will present studies of her own conducted over the last three years.

Gender Inequality Issues in Post-Soviet Georgia: Women in Family and Politics
This class will discuss gender attitudes, gender roles in the family, understanding of women sexuality. Professor Javakhishvili will discuss women underrepresentation in politics, and focus on attempts to introduce gender quotas. If time permits, she will also touch on the issue of poverty and show a short documentary on this topic.

The Role of Social Capital in Implementing the Anti-domestic Violence Policy (Georgia)
This presentation and discussion consists of three parts:

  1. The domestic violence situation in Georgia based on National research on the Prevalence of Domestic Violence in Georgia, 2010.
  2. How the anti domestic violence policy is being implemented in the country, the drawbacks in the implementation and their causes. Professor Javakhishvili will present the results of a study conducted in 2011.
  3. The findings of the policy implementation from the theoretical perspective of social capital and gender equality theories (2012 study). Here, the Georgian case serves as an illustration for the theory.
