Gender, altruism and welfare state transformation. Some perspectives on volunteering in the Czech Republic.
5.00pm for 5.30, CEES Seminar Room, 8-9 Lilybank Gardens

The changing nature of the welfare state in Europe and elsewhere has constituted an important focus of research in recent years. This paper focuses on the incorporation of volunteering into Czech health and social care services, and examines how this reflects and engenders transformations to publicly funded health care provision.  Volunteers are involved in providing a form of patient care represented as altruism and selfless service. This is an important part of the rationale for the greater involvement of NGOs in public services at a time of budgetary constraints. Most volunteers are women and the paper will consider the gendered implications of the care they provide, in particular how far it complicates women’s historical involvement in care provision as both workers and mothers.
