Learning analytics to transform educational practice

Data that can be used to enhance the learning experience are already being routinely collected and used at the University of Glasgow as part of learning analytics. The definition of learning analytics in the Jisc Code of Practice is “Learning analytics uses data about students and their activities to help institutions understand and improve educational processes, and provide better support to learners”.

Teaching staff are increasingly being encouraged to take an evidence-based approach to their teaching, learning and assessment practices.  However, many staff may not have confidence in accessing, manipulating and extracting information from learning analytic data to support student learning. This project proposes to take Moodle learning analytic data, for example Moodle logs, activity trackers and assessment analytics, and translate it into informative visualisations and summaries through building and maintaining freely available and adaptable interactive online dashboards.

This project will also promote the continuing professional and skills development of staff through the creation of freely available tutorials which will teach the skills of data manipulation and visualisation of Moodle analytic data to support evolution in learning and teaching and empower colleagues with the skills to create their own visualisations motivated by specific course and programme level interests.
