Minister for Science, Research and Innovation visits CVR

The UK Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, Amanda Solloway visited the Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging at our Centre for Virus Research on Thursday 24 June 2021.

UK Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, Amanda Solloway visited the Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging at our Centre for Virus Research on Thursday 24 June.

Mrs Solloway discussed our COVID-19 response and the CVR's pivotal role, both nationally and internationally – and how government funding will allow us to continue surveillance of possible threats in the future. 

The MP for Derby North also heard about how the SCMI supports Scottish structural biology and how infrastructure investments from the government have supported this and expanded the facility's capability for research and innovation.

Mrs Solloway said: "It was truly inspiring to see the work being done at the Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging at the University of Glasgow.

"I had a chance to hear about the collaboration and knowledge sharing across life sciences in Scotland.

"I also had the pleasure of touring the Centre for Virus Research, an incredible facility, which played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic. A big thank you to all the researchers and scientists, who worked tirelessly."

University of Glasgow Principal Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli said: "I was really pleased to welcome Minister Amanda Solloway on her visit to our UKRI-funded work at the University of Glasgow, and also to the Lighthouse Lab at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

"It was a pleasure to showcase the tremendous research work and our contribution to the UK’s COVID-19 surveillance."
