Accelerometry reporting guidance
Accelerometry has become the preferred method for objective assessment of physical behaviours, and the use of accelerometry in research has exploded over recent years. There is lots of variability in the methods used to collect and analyse data from accelerometers and other wearable devices, and key details are often poorly reported, making it hard to compare results or build upon previous research.
We are creating new guidance to help researchers clearly and consistently report how they use accelerometers to measure physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep. Our project brings together a wide range of experts and stakeholders to agree on what information should always be reported.
The guidance is being developed through activities which include:
- A scoping review of current reporting guidance
- A web-based Delphi exercise to identify expert consensus on the key items that should be reported (completed)
- A consensus workshop and pilot exercise to refine the checklist items
- Widespread dissemination of the checklists and publications.
