GPPC's Frances Mair and Bhautesh Jani GPPC, Public Health's Mia Crampin and College of Social Sciences' Chris Bunn have been awarded funding from the MRC to study multimorbidity in Africa

Professor Frances Mair together with Dr Bhautesh Jani in GPPC, Professor Mia Crampin (Public Health) and Dr Chris Bunn from the College of Social Sciences have been successful in leading a bid to gain funding from the MRC for a project titled: Multimorbidity in Africa - Increasing Understanding of the Patient Experience and Epidemiology (MAfricaEE) (MR/T037849/).

The funding is for 18 months from March 2020 and aims to use mixed methods to study multimorbidity in Malawi, Uganda and Gambia. The work will explore data gaps and provide preliminary qualitative insights into the challenge of treatment burden for those living with multimorbidity in LMICs. Such work is necessary to inform the development of future interventions and health policy.

In parallel Prof Mair is also co-investigator on another MRC grant, led by colleagues at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, titled: Exploring treatment burden and capacity for self care among patients with HIV/NCD multimorbidity in South Africa to inform interventions (EXTRA) MR/T03775X/1

This grant aims to undertake qualitative interviews with patients and carers of those with HIV and multimorbidity to aid our understanding of their experiences of treatment burden and the factors that influence their capacity to cope and self manage their multiple conditions. These perspectives will be shared with health professionals and policymakers to inform the design of future services and interventions for the increasing population of people with multimorbidity in South Africa.
