Our lab specialises in using Geoscientific computing, large-scale data analysis, and machine learning/AI to understand interactions between the atmosphere, biosphere, solid Earth, Earth's surface, and humanity. Designed for high-performance and collaborative research, our facilities empower researchers to tackle complex challenges in Earth science with speed, precision, and scalability.

What we do

Our lab supports cutting-edge research in computational geoscience through a set of state-of-the-art computational facilities.

We provide a flexible environment for:

  • Large-scale parallel simulations and data-intensive workflows
  • Developing and testing scientific software
  • Machine learning and AI applications
  • Visualising complex geospatial and scientific data

Our facility is designed to accelerate discovery and innovation across a wide range of computational geoscience projects.

Collaborative research initiatives

Our high-performance computing research is closely linked with researchers in the Earth System Dynamics Thermo- & Geochronology laboratory, and the NERC-funded ExaGEO (Exascale computing for Earth, Environment, and Sustainability Studies) Doctoral Training program run through the school of Geographical and Earth Sciences.

Facilities and equipment

Our lab is equipped with state-of-the-art computational facilities designed to support advanced research and data-intensive workflows in geo- bio- and atmospheric sciences.

Key facilities include:

  • A High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster that offers a variety of compute nodes designed for different workloads, including large-scale parallel simulations and memory-intensive modelling tasks.
  • A GPU cluster with the latest NVIDIA GPUs, optimised for machine learning, artificial intelligence, and GPU-accelerated scientific computing.
  • A high-capacity file server with 864 TB of redundant storage, providing fast, reliable access to large datasets and supporting efficient data sharing and management across projects.
  • A workstation workgroup room with Windows, Linux, and Apple workstations equipped with high-performance CPUs and GPUs, SSD storage, and fast networking. Each system has a suite of up-to-date research software pre-installed, offering a flexible and productive environment for data analysis, visualisation, and simulation.
