Biography

As Vice Principal for Research and Knowledge Exchange, I am responsible for the University's Research Strategy and policy development, working in collaboration with our four academic colleges. I am supported by key professional services teams, including Research & Innovation Services, Library, Planning, Insights & Analytics, and People & Organisational Development. I was appointed as Vice Principal in 2020, having previously held the role of Dean of Research and Deputy Head of the College of Science & Engineering. Read more about the University's leadership team and governance structures.

I am also Professor of Computational Mechanics in the James Watt School of Engineering and previously held the Royal Academy of Engineering / EDF Research Chair in Computational Mechanics. You can read about my research and research interests below.

Research interests

My research has focussed on modelling complex material behaviour and multi-physics problems, and applying these techniques to various fields, including Civil, Nuclear, Manufacturing, and Biomedical Engineering. My research addressed critical, life-limiting structural integrity issues, most recently applied to the UK civil nuclear industry.

My major research interests are in computational mechanics. These currently include multi-scale mechanics and modelling of heterogeneous materials, modelling of fracture, modelling of coupled problems, computational biomechanics and high performance computing. My work with EDF Energy focuses on the rational and accurate assessment of structural integrity, delivering new approaches for modelling fracture propagation and multi-physics problems. These will improve predictions, and reduce uncertainty, of crack propagation in the reactor core’s irradiated graphite bricks, in pipes carrying coolant at high pressure/temperature and the behaviour of the prestressed concrete reactor pressure vessels.

I am a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. I also Co-Direct the Glasgow Computational Engineering Centre, I am on the Board of the Scotland 5G Centre and the Board of the Scottish Research Partnership for Engineering.
