Student Support Officers are here to advise and signpost to support within and external to the University.
Our initial meeting is to establish the issues you are having and to discuss actions for you to start resolving them.

After our meeting, I will email you a summary of what was discussed and a summary of the actions you may wish to take. Where appropriate I can arrange a follow-up meeting if needed.

I can:

• Signpost to University support such as Disability Services, Counselling Services, The Careers Service, and Student Learning Development. This can be for things like study support and self-help resources.
• Support you in communicating with supervisors or staff.
• Explain University procedures relating to studies, particularly where your studies have been affected by your health and wellbeing.
• Signpost you to external resources that may be of support.
• Send an email outlining the steps we discussed and links to appropriate resources/support services.
• Offer a follow-up meeting or check in with you periodically.

Student Support Officer Role - how we work across the University of Glasgow.

Please note that while I can help guide you, we are not academic advisors, nor are we trained counsellors. If the level of advice requested goes beyond the level of service we are trained to provide, I will recommend other specialist agencies or practitioners. Our service is intended to primarily address a short-term need and we are not able to provide ongoing, long-term support.
Privacy

Your conversations with our Student Support Officers are private within appropriate boundaries. With your permission, some of the information you share may be passed on to other appropriate members of staff, strictly on a need-to-know basis. In accepting this agreement, you give permission for this to happen as appropriate.

Duty of Care

If we are concerned for your safety or another's safety (such as in an emergency) we have a duty of care to escalate our concerns to appropriate services. From a legal basis, if staff believe that you or a third party is at serious risk, the member of staff may share your information directly, irrespective of your permission.

Data Protection

We will only collect data that we need to provide and oversee this service to you. Where we have relied upon your consent to process your data, you also have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. If you wish to exercise any of these rights, please contact dp@gla.ac.uk
