Biography

Current position

Colin Berry is the Professor of Cardiology and Imaging at the University of Glasgow. He is Director of the British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence and Director of Research in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health. He is also the Director of Research at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital and a Consultant Cardiologist in this hospital and in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Professor Berry is an Executive Editor of the European Heart Journal and President of the British Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (2022-2024). He is a Steering Group member of the International Coronary Vasomotor Disorders International Study Group (COVADIS). In 2023, he founded a new Working Party for Ischaemic Heart Disease in the British Cardiovascular Society. Previously, he led the British Society of Cardiovascular Research, the Research Group of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society, and the Clinical Trials Committee of the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.

Background

Professor Berry studied medicine at the University of Glasgow (1987-1993) and physiology (Maîtrise) at the University of Paris (1989-1990). He was awarded a PhD in cardiovascular science at the University of Glasgow (2002).

Colin trained in Cardiology and Internal Medicine (2001-2006) first in Glasgow and then at the Montreal Heart Institute (2005-2006). Whilst in Montreal, he worked in Jean-Claude Tardif's Atherosclerosis Research Group and used imaging techniques to study stem cells and coronary artery disease. This work was supported by a British Heart Foundation International Fellowship and an International Exchange Award from the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He then undertook post-doctoral studies (2007-2009) in advanced cardiovascular imaging at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, in the US National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. This appointment was supported by a Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Fellowship from the University of Glasgow. In 2009, Colin secured a Senior Fellowship from the Scottish Funding Council.

Colin has pioneered new technologies in medicine. In 2005, Colin became the first British clinician to undertake transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). In 2011, his team implemented a world-first to map heart attack injury using MRI in patients treated at the NHS Golden Jubilee Hospital (NCT02072850). This research was funded by the British Heart Foundation in partnership with Siemens Healthineers. In 2012, he was one of the first clinicians to introduce coronary artery optical coherence tomography (OCT) into the National Health Service. Colin currently leads research involving diagnostic clinical tests and new treatments for cardiac small vessel disease.

Colin also leads teams undertaking research into Long COVID-19. He has led the CISCO-19 multisystem imaging study of people after hospitalisation for COVID-19 (NCT04403607; PMID: 35606551), the CISCO-21 trial of resistance exercise for prevention and treatment of long-COVD (NCT04900961; PMID: 35606551) and he co-leads the UK COVID-HEART study (ISRCTN58667920; PMID: 35606551). He has contributed to multiple biomedical and clinical studies on COVID-19.

Colin Berry brings internationally leading profiles in education, research and innovation in biomedical science and medicine. He values collaboration, new partnerships and diverse experience in tackling complex challenges.

The people in Professor Berry’s teams lead research into the causes, consequences, and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The teams include PhD students, early career clinician-scientists and staff with diverse backgrounds in science and medicine within the NHS, the University of Glasgow, and partners. His team’s research contextualises clinical problems at a ‘multiscale’ level, extending from populations to the bedside and the bench. Novelty is prioritised through interdisciplinary research, stratified (precision) medicine, and data-enabled trials.

Historically, chest pain with no obstructive coronary arteries was a maligned problem described as ‘Syndrome X’, and women were disproportionately affected. Colin’s research has identified disease pathways, novel treatments, and sex disparities in healthcare. Colin’s research through CorMicA (PMID: 30266608), funded by the British Heart Foundation, and related studies has changed international guidelines and terminology, with ‘Syndrome X’ being replaced by ‘ischaemia with no obstructive coronary arteries’ (INOCA) and relatedly “myocardial infarction with no obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA)”.

Research programme

The large-scale trials in include iCorMicA and PRIZE. The International Coronary Microvascular Angina (iCorMicA; NCT04674449) trial is a multicentre, academic trial of stratified medicine funded by Abbott. The Precision Medicine with Zibotentan in Microvascular Angina (PRIZE) study (NCT04097314) is an UKRI-funded multicentre, placebo-controlled trial of zibotentan, an oral endothelin A receptor-selective blocker.

British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence

New biomedical approaches are urgently needed to reduce the impact of heart failure on both individuals and society. Our BHF Centre addresses the causes, consequences and treatment of heart failure. We have brought together early career and established experts with interdisciplinary, cognate skills and lived experience to tackle some of the most important areas of unmet need in heart failure.

Our BHF Centre prioritises research into inequalities in heart failure care by sex, race, and deprivation. This is reflected in our publications and further developed through patient partnerships. Our advisors with lived experience have leadership roles in the research themes. Our researchers lead on the public policy agenda for ischaemic heart disease, heart failure, obesity, sex/gender disparities and dementia.

In silico research

Colin collaborates with experts in the physical sciences to answer key research questions in ischaemic heart disease. He has contributed to three Centre awards from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (1) SofTMech Centre, (2) SofTMechMP, an international Centre with MIT and POLIMI, and (3) SofTMech^SET to produce fast emulators for the translation of mathematical models to the clinic. The computational models assess cardiac biomechanics (Xiaoyu Luo, Hao Gao and colleagues), coronary circulation (Nick Hill) and arrhythmias (Radostin Simitev) using the heart MRI scans generated in clinical studies e.g. BHF MR-MI study.

Innovation

Finally, his group have led multiple clinical trials using novel diagnostics for cardiac small vessel disease including the guideline-changing CorMicA trial (PMID: 30266608) funded by the British Heart Foundation. Colin runs a programme of laboratory research that seeks to identify druggable targets that will lead to new treatments for people with cardiovascular disease.

Advocacy, policy and environment

In August 2018, Colin successfully made the case for heart disease to be included in the Women’s Health Plan of the Scottish Government. In 2019, he contributed data and co-authored the Bias in Biology policy report of the British Heart Foundation (BHF, 2019). In 2022, Colin contributed to the BHF Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy “Igniting Change”). He is a member of our School’s Athena Swan programme. He also serves as a voluntary advisor to patient forums including INOCA International and the International Heart Spasms Alliance.
