Use of Radioisotopes

Use of Radioisotopes

Regulations governing the use of radioactive materials are given in the 'Health Physics Notes' (August 1991) produced by the University Radiation Protection Service. The 'Ionizing Radiations Regulations 1985' require that 'Local Rules' exist for the use of radioactive materials. You should read  Note 5 in the Radiation Protection Course Notes.

Copies of these notes are held in the Graham Kerr Library and by the Safety Adviser.

In the Henry Wellcome complex, local rules for working with radio-chemicals are available from the Radiation Supervisor, or they are fixed on the Safety board outside each radiation controlled room.

Anyone proposing to use radioisotopes must be registered with the University Radiation Protection Service. They will normally be required to attend the University Radiation Protection Course. Those wishing to be registered, or wishing advice on the use of radioisotopes, should contact the Institute Radiation Adviser or if unavailable University Radiation Protection Service.
