Fire Safety Code of Practice

Fire Safety Code of Practice

It is important that everyone is aware of what should be done in the event of a fire or if the fire alarm sounds.

Teachers/Lecturers in charge of courses/modules must make sure at the first lecture and laboratory, that students are aware of the location of fire exits and what they should do if the fire alarm sounds. Plan what to do if there is a fire while you are taking a class.

Things you should know

  • Be aware of the nearest exits from any point in the building
  • Know where the extinguishers are located and how to use them
  • Know where the fire alarms are and how to set them off
  • Know how to summons the Fire Brigade by special phone
  • Know who the Fire Wardens are for the various areas

Things you should do if you discover a fire

  • Set off a fire alarm
  • Call the Fire Brigade by dialling 4444 on any University telephone extension or by using the 'hotline' telephone on the outside of the Graham Kerr Building opposite the West Medical Building.  In the Henry Wellcome complex cal the Fire Brigade by dialling 2222.  You should not hesitate to call the Fire Brigade if there is no obvious fire but if there is smoke or a strong smell of burning. The Fire Brigade will never object to being called out in such circumstances.
  • Only attempt to tackle the fire if you think it is safe to do so and you feel confident in doing this. If in doubt, leave the area, closing doors behind you and exit the building by the quickest route.

What you should do if the fire alarm sounds

  • Leave the building immediately, in an orderly fashion, by the quickest route
  • Do not delay, or make a detour, to collect belongings
  • Teachers with classes should supervise their exit from the building
  • Close the doors behind you if you are the last person to exit an area
  • On leaving the Graham Kerr Building make for the assembly point in the car parking area outside the Kelvin Building
  • For the Henry Wellcome complex, exit the building immediately through one of the emergency exits:
    - Henry Wellcome Building – via Main door, 3rd floor exit, basement store exit
    - Jarrett Building – via Southwest stairwell exit, 2nd floor main door
    - Urquhart Building – via the Henry Wellcome Building main entrance, ground floor exit
    - Botham/McRobert Buildings – via Botham building main entrance, exit adjacent to the Jarrett Building, McRobert building main entrance

After exiting the building, gather at the closest Assembly Point (just inside the Ilay Road Gate or at the south end of the Urquhart Building).

  • Do not re-enter the building until authorized to do so by a Fire Officer.
  • Do not block the roads

Fire Wardens

Fire Wardens

Every area of the building has several Fire Wardens who are familiar with fire exits and fire fighting equipment in their area. In the event of the fire alarm sounding, carry out any instructions given by a Fire Warden.
