Dr Joe Norton

Position: Technical Coordinator – Robotics Integration (Postdoctoral Researcher)
Email: j.c.norton@leeds.ac.uk
Address: Room 1.56, School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Leeds

Joe received his integrated Masters in Mechatronics and Robotics from the University of Leeds, where he began to specialise in developing medical devices. His Masters project was on the design and development of an active sphincter for faecal incontinence. Joe then carried out his PhD in the same university, with a thesis focused on the design and development of a mobile robotic platform for colonoscopy.

Joe is currently working on achieving active control of the Sonopill system using magnetic and robotic principles. The capsule will be manipulated inside the body by leveraging magnetic coupling between it and a strong external magnet. The external magnet is controlled using a 7-axis robotic arm and previously developed localisation technology. Joe’s work will involve the design, fabrication and testing of this ‘active’ magnetic capsule, with the aim of producing an ultrasound capsule that can target any region of the gastrointestinal tract with high accuracy and repeatability.
