Dr. David Silkenat, University of Edinburgh: 'Blood in the Soil: An Environmental History of American Slavery'

Looking at the intersection of slavery and the environment in the United States, Dr. David Silkenat explores how the  Southern ecosystem was transformed by slave labor and how the lives of the enslaved were shaped by environmental pressures.  From deforestation to hurricanes, and soil erosion to extinction, the final century of American slavery reveals an ecological collapse with its roots in black bondage.

All welcome!
