This course will provide students with the opportunity to carry out an independent research project in the field of chemical biology.
The project will take place over the summer period with the student meeting regularly with their supervisor. There will be lectures covering good research practice and safe working.
Supervisor report - 30%
Written report (5-6,000 words approx.) - 50%
Viva - 20%

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No
Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.
The supervisor assessment of performance during research is not available for reassessment.
This course aims to:
■ Introduce the student to the planning and practical execution of a short research project
■ Provide practical experience of research methods and data analysis
■ Provide experience of writing a research report
■ Provide experience of presenting a poster or giving a short research talk
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students should be able to:
■ Perform a risk assessment of a proposed laboratory experiment
■ Demonstrate practical expertise in the research methods used in the project
■ Generate, critically evaluate and analyse experimental data
■ Organise and produce a written project report, that includes explanatory hypotheses for the data presented, critical assessment of the contribution of the research to current knowledge, and critical evaluation of its limitations and scope for further research in the topic.
■ Present their research findings and the relevance of the work to the research area in a clear, concise, critical manner in an oral presentation.
■ Plan and mange time effectively by prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines.
■ Work co-operatively and effectively with colleagues in a research environment and reflect critically on their role and performance within the group
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
