Shamsa Sabir
I am a PhD researcher at Queen’s University Belfast as part of the BBSRC NorthWestBio Doctoral Training Partnership. My research looks at how the gut microbiome contributes to cardiovascular disease, focusing on the bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila and the metabolites it produces.
I investigate how these metabolites influence inflammation, oxidative stress, and energy metabolism in the heart, with the aim of uncovering new mechanisms linking gut health to heart disease.
Before starting my PhD, I completed a Master’s in Health Sciences Research at Chiang Mai University, Thailand, where I studied oxidative stress in relation to air pollution.
Outside of my research, I enjoy keeping things balanced with simple routines, spending time outdoors, and unwinding with good food and company."
