Erwin Sioson
I am a PhD student at the University of Glasgow and partly, at Queen’s University Belfast. I took my bachelor’s in medical laboratory science and master’s in biology at the Philippines. My research background combines microbiology and data-oriented disciplines, with a focus on microbiomes and natural products from unique environments.
My PhD explores the antimicrobial potential of seagrass microbiomes, an area increasingly impacted by climate change and antimicrobial resistance. The project uses methods such as metagenome sequencing to determine the biogeography of Scottish seagrass microbiomes. From there, I will perform microbial isolation and AI-based techniques to predict antimicrobial peptides, followed by lab validation and modelling of their effectiveness.
Outside the lab, I enjoy Asian and Western history and culture, as well as nature trips. I also like exploring new places (using a pedal and motorbike) and hope to travel around the UK and Europe when I can.
