The 2019 Carers Survey for University staff is now open and can be accessed here.

The 2018 Staff Survey established that 926 respondents (21% of the of the total of 4384 respondents) identified as individuals who “look after or give help or support to family members, friends, neighbours or others who have a long-term physical or mental illness or disability, or problems related to old age”.

If you look after or give help to others with a long-term physical or mental illness or disability, or problems related to old age (or if you otherwise identify yourself as a carer), please take the chance to have your say. The information gathered through this survey will be used to help the University:

• build a better understanding of the extent of employees caring responsibilities and the challenges faced in fulfilling these
• assess the effectiveness of support provided by the University
• identify specific areas of focus to inform the development of a new Carers Policy

Professor Anne Anderson, Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Social Sciences and the University’s Gender Equality Champion, said: “Our people are at the heart of our University Strategy and as such are fundamental to the delivery of our strategic objectives. We continually review our policies to ensure they are aligned with the world-class working environment we strive to provide and, recognising through the staff survey results that many of our people have caring responsibilities, have identified an opportunity to consider how best to support this staff group. I therefore encourage staff members, who identify as carers, to take part in this survey and to influence the ongoing work in this area.”

The survey is expected to run until Monday 27 May 2019 and summarised results will be published by Monday 10th June 2019.

Alternatively, staff may wish more generally to contribute to the broader review of the University’s flexible working policy.
