Celebration of UofG Knowledge Exchange Winners

The awards recognised the very best of the University’s influence and impact on the economy and society

The awards recognised and rewarded excellence in the exchange of knowledge, expertise and intellectual assets through engagement with industry, the public sector and community partners, celebrating the very best of the University’s influence and impact on the economy and society.

The awards spanned seven categories to reflect the broad range of excellence in engagement across the University. The winners were:

Best Collaboration (Arts and Culture)

Professor Steven Driscoll from the School of Humanities and Dr David Archibald from the School of Culture & Creative Arts for Govan Young, a documentary film produced in partnership with children from Govan, bringing archaeology to life for fresh audiences. The film has been screened at more than 25 international film festivals and has won seven international awards.Govan Young 650

Best Collaboration (Business)

Professor Ralf Kaiser and his team at the Glasgow Nuclear Physics Group for the creation of the spin-out company, Lynkeos Technology. The company is developing technology which can be used to image the contents of nuclear waste containers. Strong collaboration between the partners is at the heart of its success.Lynkeos Technology 650

Best Collaboration (Policy & Practice)

Professor Sayantan Ghosal from the Adam Smith Business School for his partnership with NHS Scotland to improve their communications to help them recover losses from fraudulent or claims made in error. The project has helped to recover £1M of incorrectly claimed exemptions.Sayanthan Ghosal 650

Best Community or Public Engagement Initiative (Joint winner)

Professor Simon Newman, Dr Stephen Mullen, Nelson Mundell and Marenka Thompson-Odlum from the School of Humanities for the Runaway Slaves in Britain project which is changing our understanding of slavery in Britain. The project has resulted in new educational resources for Scotland and is informing reparative justice discussions.Runaway Slaves 650 KE Awards

Dr Caroline Millins from the School of Veterinary Medicine and Dr Roman Biek from the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health & Comparative Medicine, are working with the NHS Scotland and community partners to investigate Lyme disease in Uist. The project is helping this highly affected community to manage ticks and Lyme disease risk more effectively.Lyme disease 650 KE Awards

Glasgow Entrepreneur of the Year

Dr Derek Gilchrist, Chief Executive Officer of Causeway Therapeutics, a Glasgow spin-out company developing novel therapies for the treatment of musco-skeletal diseases in animal and human patients. Derek is leading the expansion of Causeway’s drug discovery pipeline, developing therapies aimed at osteoarthritis and lower back pain.‌Derek Gilchrist 650

Building Partnerships for Impact

The awards ceremony took place as part of the University’s 2019 Knowledge Exchange & Engagement Conference, which brought together over 140 academic and support staff from across the University.

The conference provided insightful and informative sector-wide debate, including keynote addresses and chaired panel discussions which heard commentary from Will Hutton (Principal of Hertford College Oxford and Chair, Big Innovation Centre); Dr Olivia Stevenson (Head of Public Policy, UCL), Dr Claudio Cavalluzzo (Director, Converge Challenge) and Dr Malcolm Skingle (Director, Academic Liaison, GlaxoSmithKline).

The event provided delegates with interactive workshops to provide practical advice and support in developing knowledge exchange and public engagement projects. The conference was supported by exhibitions by the Innovation Centres, Interface, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, allowing delegates the opportunity to discuss routes to partnership with these organisations.

UofG Principal Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli said: “The Knowledge Exchange & Engagement Conference is a celebration of the rich variety of partnerships and engagement our academic community undertakes to deliver wider benefit to society and the economy. Our academics are developing new and creative ways to address global challenges and work with partners to drive innovation, impact and change. We were delighted by the calibre of the nominations for this year’s awards across the University and I would like to congratulate the winners for their outstanding achievements.”
