University Main Gate to close temporarily

One-way traffic system around the Main Building in place from 18 March

As you may know, we have been working with Glasgow City Council to identify ways of improving pedestrian safety on University Avenue.  The City Council has now approved construction of a wider, safer crossing opposite the Main Gate; work will begin on 18 March.

We will have to close the Main Gate to vehicles while the works are progressed.  For a six-month period, vehicle access to the Gilmorehill campus will be via the Dumbarton Road gate (two-way) and Pearce Lodge gate (entrance only).  To avoid congestion, we will implement a one-way traffic system around the Main Building.

The Main Gate will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists. Access via the Main Gate, Botany Gate and Chemistry Way will be maintained for high-sided vehicles and emergency services.

Read more about the programme of works and proposed traffic routes.

There is also a one way system map available showing traffic routes.

We will need to remove 16 car parking spaces on the South Front and Professors’ Square from use while the works are taken forward; however, Estates colleagues have identified an additional 20 spaces on or near the campus which we can make available during this period.

Please note that we are still in discussion with the City Council about other ways of improving pedestrian safety on streets around the Gilmorehill campus.

I would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding.

Chief Operating Officer and University Secretary
