Summer graduation season is undeniably one of the most exciting times in the UofG calendar. It’s a chance to celebrate our talented students and staff and to tell some of the great stories which have unfolded in their time at the University. Here we round up some of the coverage produced by the UofG Social Media and Student Communications Team.

Honorary Graduate - Sabir Zazai

On Commemoration Day this year, CEO of the Scottish Refugee Council Sabir Zazai was awarded an honorary degree. We caught up with him on the day, along with his father Mohamed, who travelled from Afghanistan to attend the ceremony in Bute Hall after the Home Office overturned their decision to deny his visitor visa.

Honorary Graduate - Sam Heughan

Another notable honorary graduate was of course Outlander star Sam Heughan, who picked up his doctorate at the Dumfries Campus on 3rd July, surrounded by proud UofG graduates and adoring fans alike.

Wendy's UofG story

We also told the story of Wendy, who graduated with a Masters in Medicinal Chemistry. She faced the prospect of missing out on university because her family was seeking asylum at the time she was applying for university, until the UofG Widening Participation team stepped in.

UofG organist

What would graduations be without the booming sounds of the organ in Bute Hall? We caught up with UofG organist Kevin Bowyer, who famously has a bit of fun with ceremony song choices.

UofG's own gin launched

Another typical feature of graduations is something to wet one’s whistle and we were delighted to hear UofG alumni Helen Stewart created a gin called ‘1451’ inspired by the University of Glasgow!

UofG Graduation reflections

For many, graduations are a time for reflection. So as the new graduates took stock of their time at UofG, we asked what advice they might give their younger selves if they were to do it all over again.

UofG Summer Grads 2019

These were just some of the magical moments captured during this year’s summer graduations. A massive congratulations and thanks to all graduates who appeared in front of our cameras, and the dedicated UofG staff who make the magic happen!
