Perceptions of Cancer

Monday 5th of August 2019, 7pm

Waterstones, Sauchiehall Street

Speaker: Sara Macdonald

Dr Sara Macdonald is a primary care based medical sociologist in the Institute of Health & Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow. Sara’s research focuses on the public understanding of cancer and cancer risk and considers sources of information that help us make decisions about health and lifestyles. Recently, Sara has been exploring representation of cancer in the media and questions how this influences our understanding and experience of cancer. In this talk – How the media frames cancer narratives, Sara will discuss the ways in which the media reports cancer risk and how personal cancer narratives and stories may shape our views. While we know that the media are an important source of information, Sara questions whether media organisations and journalists are aware of the influence and impact cancer stories have.
