7T fMRI-EEG research from ICE featured in MVLS video
Published: 9 March 2026
Using simultaneous EEG and fMRI at 7T, ICE researchers are uncovering how different brain signals influence motivation and decision-making, with potential implications for understanding mental health conditions such as addiction.
A video produced by the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences (MVLS) highlights recently published neuroimaging research from ICE that combined EEG with fMRI at 7T to separate subcortical reward signals in both time and space.
Researchers Dr Joana Carvalheiro and Professor Marios Philiastides are studying how the brain processes anticipation and value, using a novel radiofrequency (RF) coil developed by Dr Shajan Gunamony that enables simultaneous EEG and fMRI in the 7T scanner.
