Research Firsts' Exhibition Competition – Call for Submissions!

As we prepare to mark the ARC’s first birthday, we’re inviting colleagues across the University’s research community to think creatively about examples of own ‘research firsts’. For instance, these might represent the first time something is understood, seen, produced, or demonstrated, or could be a memorable moment such as a first publication, book or other output. We hope to attract a broad range of ideas from different roles across the University, and encourage submissions which also highlight personal impacts of a ‘research first’.

Your entries will shape a new public-facing exhibition that we’ll host over the ARC’s birthday period in June. We’ll be offering up to 5 prizes for entries considered by our judging panel to be particularly thoughtful or engaging – and these will be announced at the ARC Birthday Bash on 6 June.

To enter, please submit by Fri 19 May:-

  • An image representing your ‘research first’ concept that can be printed at A2 size, preferably in portrait orientation
  • An accompanying text vignette up to 100 words to add meaning to your image
  • A short and engaging title

Full details including exhibition guidelines can be seen here.

Submissions (and any queries) should be emailed to ARCEngage@glasgow.ac.uk with the subject line 'Research First'. The deadline for entries is 5pm on Fri 19 May

Information about funder open access policies

Dear Researchers

We would like to draw your attention to the open access policies of several major research funders. Some of these require researchers to check journal compliance and include recommended language in their manuscripts prior to submission, so it is essential that researchers are aware of the policies rather than hoping the open access service will be able to enable compliance after acceptance.

The major funders who have implemented these changes are listed below, with a brief summary of the  requirements.

UKRI (applies to research articles and conference proceedings submitted after 01Apr22) and Wellcome (applies to research articles and conference proceedings submitted after 01Jan2021):

  • Research articles, reviews and conference proceedings must be open access immediately upon publication with a CC-BY licence. This can be achieved by paying for immediate open access to the published version or by depositing the accepted manuscript in a repository;
  • If taking the repository route, authors should include a standard declaration of their intention to make the accepted version open access at the point of submission;
  • The Library is no longer able to pay open access fees for hybrid subscription journals (those with both a paid and free route to open access), and is no longer able to pay page or colour charges, from the UKRI or Wellcome open access block grants;
  • Biomedical articles funded by MRC, BBSRC and Wellcome must continue to be deposited in Europe Pubmed Central;
  • Research articles, reviews and conference proceedings must include a research data access statement
  • Pre-prints are out of scope of the policy, but UKRI and Wellcome both encourage use of pre-prints and reserve the right to ensure use of pre-prints in the context of emergencies.

Similar policies (with varying degrees of support) have also been implemented by the Bill and Melinda Gates FoundationCancer Research UKChief Scientist’s Office Scotland (CSO)European CommissionNIHR and NIH

Any researcher who is considering submitting an article for publication and who is unsure about their open access obligations should contact the Open Access Team for support: research-openaccess@glasgow.ac.uk
