Collections are conceptual

Collections is organised through three thematic clusters (material, conceptual and ethical) that draw on and develop existing research excellence at the University of Glasgow.

Collections are conceptual. The focus of this cluster is methodological and self-reflexive.

The research habits and pedagogic assumptions of individual disciplines and their collections are explored and tested in this cluster. Two projects employ novel modes of scientific analysis (computational models) within the context of Social Sciences and Arts to challenge disciplinary orthodoxies. In the third project in this cluster, the student will be provided with an exceptional opportunity to map – via a unique disciplinary and pedagogic collection - the evolution of an ‘unorthodox discipline’ (Geography and Earth Sciences) that within the modern academy has continually negotiated an artificially instituted border-crossing in terms of methodology between Arts, Humanities and Science. Working in alliance with existing large initiatives within the University such as the Urban Big Data Centre, our partner institutions in the City such as Glasgow Life, and led by innovative interventions from colleagues in English Literature and Geography, the projects identified in this cluster focus on administrative and governmental data; a unique pedagogic collection; as well as literary works, thereby providing these students with opportunities for significant and pioneering projects that build on and develop existing areas of research excellence using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
