Biography

I'm a social scientist with nearly twenty year's experience designing, implementing and analysing some of Britain's largest studies of health and wellbeing, including the Health Survey for England and the British Gambling Prevalence Survey. I'm a specialist in gambling research, policy and practice and am currently co-director of Gambling Research Glasgow and leading the Lancet Public Health Commission on Gambling. My research focuses on understanding the impact of gambling on people's lives and devising solutions. My first book, Games without Frontiers?, looks at the intersection between gaming and gambling and how this has developed. My work is funded by the ESRC, Wellcome and NIHR.

Research interests

My research interests focus on exploring gambling and gaming behaviours are changing and the ways in which changing technological infrastructures create new risks and opportunities in relation to both. In addition, I'm interested in understanding the ways in which policy evidence is created and framed, and exploring how best to develop and influence solutions to policy problems - this specifically includes consideration of how to incorporate lived-experience into decision making.
