Professor Robina Goodlad

It is with deep regret that we have to inform you of the death on Wednesday 8 June 2005 of Professor Robina Goodlad, Head of the Department of Urban Studies, after a short illness. Our thoughts are with her husband, her two daughters and her family. As well as being a highly respected academic and teacher, Robina played a full and active part in public affairs and policy debates concerning housing and community development in Scotland and the UK. In recent years she was the founding Director and remained Co-Director of the Scottish Centre for Research in Social Justice. She was an enthusiastic colleague and friend and supportive at every level. She will be sadly missed by colleagues and friends in the University, in Scotland and beyond. We are proud and grateful that we knew her and worked with her. The family have set up the Robina Goodlad Memorial Trust to which you can contribute in her honour if you wish.

Property and Planning: Department Explores Initiative in Professional Education

Following strong representations to the University from professional institutes and employers, a decision is now imminent on whether the Department of Urban Studies will launch a major new initiative in both planning and property education in 2006. Professor David Adams, who joined the Department in December 2004 as the Ian Mactaggart Chair of Property and Urban Studies, leads the process of preliminary course design and detailed investigation of market potential. A wide range of professional employers, practitioners and academics in the field attended a Consultative Forum at the University in early June in order to discuss various aspects of the Department's initiative to provide a Graduate Programme in Property and Planning. The Forum was very well attended and a great deal of interest was shown. The feedback and opinions expressed by a large number of participants will be carefully considered in any future development of the initiative. More detailed information about the proposed Graduate Programme in Property and Planning will be available soon.
