Mathieu Moonshine for K3

Abstract

K3 surfaces are examples of certain complex surfaces, which have fascinated mathematicians for almost two centuries. Quite recently, physicists have observed the phenomenon of Mathieu Moonshine. This phenomenon appears to relate a geometric invariant of K3 surfaces, the elliptic genus, to a large, finite group, the Mathieu group M24.

In this talk, we give an overview on the Mathieu Moonshine phenomenon and the quest for its explanation.
