Abstract
Acoustic–gravity waves (AGWs) are compression waves triggered by sudden pressure changes in a medium (ocean or atmosphere), e.g., by submarine earthquakes, landslides, meteorite impacts, volcanic eruptions, or nonlinear interactions of surface waves. They travel near the speed of sound in water (~1500 m/s) and can double their speed when coupled with the seabed, making them effective early precursors of geophysical events. AGWs are gaining interest across fields including oceanography, geophysics, and tsunami research. This talk provides an overview of AGWs, with a focus on real-time tsunami warning.
