Lattices, Weyl groups and rigidity of von Neumann algebras

Abstract

Connes' rigidity conjecture predicts that the von Neumann algebra of a higher rank lattice remembers the ambient simple Lie group. In this talk, I will explain a recent result showing that the Weyl group of a noncompact simple Lie group is an invariant of a natural inclusion of von Neumann algebras attached to the lattice.
