Abstract

Subject-specific language difficulties can be a barrier to success for international students.  Typically support in this area has been in the taught postgraduate space. Dedicated, embedded language support structures for new undergraduate mathematics students are not currently widespread.

This talk will outline the structure of the language support put in place in recent years in the School of Mathematics at the University of Leeds, which focuses on maintaining the development of academic language skills in a mathematics context. We will present a summary of student feedback on the programme, student outcomes and engagement. We will describe also how the programme has increased our ability to have targeted interventions with students.  We'll also examine some recent progression outcomes for international students on different programmes of study.

There should be ample time for discussion of approaches to support in Leeds and Glasgow and to explore possible future collaborations.
