Abstract

If you thicken a graph you get a handlebody, whose boundary is a closed orientable surface. This picture leads to the notion of a moduli space of marked complex handlebodies, that interpolates between Teichmuller space, which paramaterizes  marked Riemann surfaces and Outer space, which parameterizes marked metric graphs. I will explain why the space of marked complex handlebodies is a simply-connected complex manifold, whose structure at infinity is encoded by the simplicial closure of Outer space.
