Challenges in Estimating Density and Distribution of Game Species in Broad-Scale Monitoring Programs

Javier Fernandez Lopez (Institute for Game and Wildlife Research)

Wednesday 30th April 14:00-15:00 Maths 311B

Abstract

Accurate knowledge of the distribution and abundance of game species is essential to ensure the proper management of their populations, to support their conservation, and to prevent health-related emergencies. However, developing large-scale monitoring programs that provide a supranational overview of the status and trends of wildlife populations entails significant challenges, particularly due to the heterogeneity of data sources and the vast geographic scope involved. In this seminar, we will discuss the main challenges associated with large-scale assessments of game species distribution and density, as well as review some of the statistical approaches currently being applied in international projects such as ENETWILD, the European Observatory of Wildlife, and LIFE Iberconejo.
