Handle Numbers of Knots, Links, and 3-Manifolds

Abstract
A (circular) Heegaard splitting of a (sutured) 3-manifold requires a certain number of handles. We will discuss how this count depends on the 2nd homology class of the Heegaard surface and relates to some classical invariants like tunnel number and the Thurston norm. We will also explore some curious phenomena in the theory through analogies involving knots and links.
