Abstract

Every knot in S3 appears as a cross-section of a knotted surface in S4.  By restricting to ribbon knotted surfaces (those that are Morse-theoretically simple) we develop new notions of complexity for knots in S3. We’ll discuss these notions in relation to the ribbon property in S3, the doubly slice genus, and the fusion number.
