Abstract

Bimodules of a von Neumann factor have a rich algebraic structure as a special kind of tensor category.  These tensor categories play a similar role when studying subfactors that Galois groups play in the theory of field extensions.  I will explain what tensor categories are, how they're related to operator algebras, and explain the current state of knowledge about examples of fusion categories.
