Abstract

Intersection forms are symmetric, bilinear, integral forms that are defined on even-dimensional manifolds using the middle homology group. When defined for 4-dimensional manifolds, there are several powerful theorems that allow us to use the intersection form to determine whether two manifolds are homtopy equivalent, homeomorphic, or even diffeomorphic. This talk will aim to introduce intersection forms for 4-manifolds, present their classification, and some useful results using intersection forms.
