Abstract

The field of Operator Algebras was kick-started in the 1930's by a series of papers with the title "On Rings of Operators" written by John von Neumann, who would later become famous for his work on computing and game theory, and Francis Murray. The problem, motivated by Quantum Mechanics, was to understand unitary representations of group on infinite dimensional Hilbert space. I shall discus the finite dimensional case that they (perhaps) hoped would generalise, and the exotic new structures they found when they discovered it didn't.
