Let k be a field of characteristic p (or possibly the ring of p-adic integers). We introduce the notion of a compact p-adic analytic group G, and define the completed group ring ("Iwasawa algebra") kG. We outline some of what is known about the structure of kG, and (if time permits) sketch a proof that kG is a catenary ring in the case when G is virtually nilpotent and k is a finite field.
