Abstract

I will be defining the mapping class group of a surface and give some examples of this for surfaces we know. I will then define a Dehn twist and outline a few ways of thinking about this map. Finally I will give a detailed outline of how to prove that the mapping class group is finitely generated, and the minimum amount of generators required.
