Abstract

Descriptive set theory, which can be described as the study of
reasonable (=definable) sets and functions on separable metric spaces, has
in recent years been used to study classification problems in a variety of
areas of mathematics. Operator algebra, and the classification problems
found there, has been one of the targets of this program. In this talk, I
will give an overview of these developments, and explain in particular why
descriptive set theory offers a useful global approach to the complexity
of classification problems in analysis. I'll also hope to mention a few
open problems.
